Winter is upon us. Even in Los Angeles it has dipped to a frigid 57 degrees. The chilly air and daylight savings time have joined forces in me, triggering intense cravings for winter spices, Christmas sweaters, fuzzy slippers, and hearty stews. Bring on the braised lamb shanks and pumpkin pie!
But here is one healthy way to revel in the flavors of winter without having to eat an entire pumpkin cheesecake with Bananas Foster and ice cream: the pumpkin-banana smoothie. Slightly tangy and lightly spiced, this beverage is the perfect seasonal snack to hold you over between heavy, melty, meaty, and sugary holiday meals.
Feel free to add almonds or pecans if you want a heartier smoothie.
